AR-15 iron sight picture and alignment basics

A usable iron sight picture is simple: center the front post in the rear aperture, level the post tip on the target aiming point, and keep that relationship consistent shot to shot. Flip-up sets like FBUIS-B only give you that picture when both sights are locked upright.

Build the picture

  1. Equal light ring around the post inside the aperture (not jammed to one side).
  2. Flat/top of the post bisecting your intended POA (6 o’clock or center hold—pick one and stick to it while zeroing).
  3. Same cheek weld every group; changing head height changes the picture more than a click of windage.
  4. With dual apertures, the small hole makes centering easier to see; the large hole is faster but less precise.
